Chris King Headsets

Posted by: Chris King | Comments (0)

Quick disclaimer: I’m not the Chris King that makes these headsets. I just happen to share the name and be really into cycling. Anyway, I figured I had no choice but to use Chris King Headsets and report back to the world with my thoughts.

Chris King Headsets Overview

If you aren’t familiar with the Chris King headsets, here are the basics you need to know. First, they are fully sealed. Chris King Precision Components were the first manufacturers to introduce that critical feature back in 1976. Second, they come in titanium or stainless steel models. There are three titanium options and one stainless is 4 sizes and lots of different colors. (The color picking part is actually really fun…you can design your own combination to match your team colors, country flag or just be different.)

All Chris King headsets as made in the USA. These guys are a green-oriented company that really believes in find craftsmanship, local labor and reducing manufacturing waste.

You can only buy the headsets through an authorized retailer who will provide a 10-year warranty. That’s a lot of wear and tear if you ride daily like I do.

I’ve only used the InSet headsets so I can’t comment on the rest of their line. According to the website, the other options are the NoThreadSet, GripNut, 2Nut, SteelSet, Devolution and Titanium. The InSet is a great product because it is compatible with so many bicycle models all over the world.

Here is a YouTube video from Jeff at Chris King Precision Components explaining the InSet product line much better than I ever could.

When shopping for a new Chris King headset (or any other headset for that matter) the three things everyone wants to know are:

  1. Performance
  2. Weight
  3. Price

Let’s tackle them in that order

Chris King Headset Performance Review

I figured you’d want more that just 1 guys opinion, so I tracked down some reviews and did my best to summarize them here.

chris king threaded headset review

Summary of Chris King Threaded Headset reviews posted to RoadBikeReview.com

RoadBikeReview.com and MTBR.com had a bunch of Chris King headset reviews for both the threaded and unthreaded products. I choose to focus only on the reviews that were submitted in the last 12 months thinking that they were the best reflection of the current product performance. I must say that I disagreed with a lot of the comments and thought about adding “my own 2 cents”, but the journalism major in me won out. I’m reporting ‘just the review facts’ without my own commentary.

Chris King Threaded Headset Reviews

With a rating of 4.89 out of 5 across 43 separate reviews, I think the numbers on the threaded headset speak for themselves. The comments range from accolades like “The Rolls-Royce of bicycle components” to “Unbeatable. Practically an install and forget component”.

Chris King NoThread Headset Reviews

Not a lot of online love for the NoThreadSet. Note that the reviews in the pictures are all from 2008 or earlier.

  • Value Rating: Star ratings of 5,5,4,1,1

Chris King Headset MSRP

Shopping results for a search of Chris King Headsets. You can compare prices from online stores and local bike shops.

The last consideration for selecting your Chris King Headset is price. As stated before, you need to buy through an authorized retailer like your local pro bike shop. The best way to compare prices is using the Shopping function in Google. You can compare prices across online retailers and local bike shops. Depending on how soon you need the headset and how much the shipping rates are you may find the best deal online.

When I looked around I actually found some of the best deals on Amazon.com. The reason this works is because lots of small bike shops have Amazon storefronts. Amazon will allow you to compare prices on an exact make and model search. Try it out yourself. I tend to get great deals this way.

One of our most innovative, popular thinkers takes on-in exhilarating style-one of our key questions: Where do good ideas come from? With Where Good Ideas Come From, Steven Johnson pairs the insight of his bestselling Everything Bad Is Good for You and the dazzling erudition of The Ghost Map and The Invention of Air to address an urgent and universal question: What sparks the flash of brilliance? How does groundbreaking innovation happen? Answering in his infectious, culturally omnivorous style, using his fluency in fields from neurobiology to popular culture, Johnson provides the complete, exciting, and encouraging story of how we generate the ideas that push our careers, our lives, our society, and our culture forward. Beginning with Charles Darwin’s first encounter with the teeming ecosystem of the coral reef and drawing connections to the intellectual hyperproductivity of modern megacities and to the instant success of YouTube, Johnson shows us that the question we need to ask is, What kind of environment fosters the development of good ideas? His answers are never less than revelatory, convincing, and inspiring as Johnson identifies the seven key principles to the genesis of such ideas, and traces them across time and disciplines. Most exhilarating is Johnson’s conclusion that with today’s tools and environment, radical innovation is extraordinarily accessible to those who know how to cultivate it. Where Good Ideas Come From is essential reading for anyone who wants

Ok, this is not a place to start bashing people, starting political arguments, or racial confrontation. Rage music can be interpreted in many different ways. but this video is about the freedom fighters, the movement makers, the people who, despite their color, race, gender, or sex, decided it was time to stand up and make change in a non-confronting, non aggressive way. he talks about how everyday people like you and me can make a difference. He used his music to stir up thinking, education, and awareness amongst the youth in order to arm us better for the future. Knowledge is our weapon, our power, and our burden. Gather what you can and stockpile, for it is our only hope. But use it wisely.
